landing in the late evening
So we've arrived in Nairobi to be greeted by what appeared to be a sea of people at the airport holding up signs and hoping that you're the one person that they've come to fetch. A madhouse. But our host, Antony, was there to welcome us with his wife - they instantly made us feel like this will be a piece of cake. Nice ex McKinsey / Harvard guy - runs the entire operation in Kenya and Uganda - all about using business skills to make a difference in rural poverty.
After over 24 hours of traveling, we were ready to crash. Our apartment was nice, modest, with a cool new roommate - another volunteer. Sara is from South Africa and after spending two years in invstment banking on Wall Street she was ready for a change. It was refreshing to hear her story - she's got no plans of what she's doing after this - maybe another volunteer assignment? Anyway, she seemed very happy with Technoserve which was reassuring to hear.
And so we're here - first day in the office, meeting the people running the projects and getting all the administrative stuff out of the way. We'll be in Nairobi for the first week getting to know the organization before we move on to Mombasa, or actually a little town south of that, right on the beach. The office is a mix of local people with some expats, primarily other volunteers. There are five major projects going on at the moment - all focused on small enterprizes and farming, all outside of Nairobi.
Rob and I are learning how to share a computer and Internet and we'll see how well it's going to go - so far, the first two hours have been great!
